For the third consecutive year, Central Asia recorded growth in supplies from abroad of bleached sulphate pulp, which increased by 18% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 86% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, bleached sulphate pulp imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports posted significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 106% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Uzbekistan (X tons) represented the largest importer of bleached sulphate pulp, generating 58% of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 26% share, followed by Mongolia (10%). Turkmenistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Uzbekistan increased at an average annual rate of +17.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mongolia (+40.9%), Kazakhstan (+11.9%) and Turkmenistan (+7.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mongolia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +40.9% from 2012-2021. While the share of Uzbekistan (+58 p.p.) and Mongolia (+6.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Turkmenistan (-12.6 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (-47.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bleached sulphate pulp in Central Asia, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by Mongolia, with an 11% share.

In Uzbekistan, bleached sulphate pulp imports increased at an average annual rate of +19.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (+9.6% per year) and Mongolia (+42.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 23% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Turkmenistan ($X per ton) and Mongolia ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) and Uzbekistan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkmenistan (+5.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
