Bottled Water Market Size in Central Asia

The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, bottled water exports dropped sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

In 2022, Kazakhstan (X tons) was the largest exporter of bottled waters, creating 69% of total exports. Uzbekistan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 18% share, followed by Kyrgyzstan (12%).

Exports from Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +18.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+22.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +22.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Uzbekistan (-17.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Uzbekistan increased by +18 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest bottled water supplier in Central Asia, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kazakhstan amounted to +15.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kyrgyzstan (+7.7% per year) and Uzbekistan (-20.0% per year).

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 28%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (-2.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, approx. X tons of bottled waters were imported in Central Asia; which is down by -28% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 47%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, bottled water imports dropped slightly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -3.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 38%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Kazakhstan (X tons) represented the key importer of bottled waters, generating 73% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons) and Turkmenistan (X tons), together achieving an 18% share of total imports. Mongolia (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+53.8%) and Kyrgyzstan (+5.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +53.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mongolia (-1.2%) and Turkmenistan (-7.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+14 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Mongolia (-3.4 p.p.) and Turkmenistan (-12.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bottled waters in Central Asia, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with a 4.3% share.

In Kazakhstan, bottled water imports increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uzbekistan (+37.3% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+7.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 36% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a perceptible descent. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
