Exports in Central Asia

After six years of growth, overseas shipments of calcium carbonate decreased by -30.3% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 951%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, calcium carbonate exports declined sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 387% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Uzbekistan (X tons) represented the key exporter of calcium carbonate, constituting 60% of total exports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) held a 30% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Kazakhstan (10%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Kyrgyzstan (with a CAGR of +44.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) emerged as the largest calcium carbonate supplier in Central Asia, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 22% share of total exports.

In Uzbekistan, calcium carbonate exports expanded at an average annual rate of +93.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+4.9% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+29.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -4.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 54%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of calcium carbonate increased by 20% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports recorded a measured increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 158%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, calcium carbonate imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 136%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Uzbekistan was the key importer of calcium carbonate in Central Asia, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 58% of total imports in 2021. Turkmenistan (X tons) held a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tajikistan (15%) and Kazakhstan (7.8%). Kyrgyzstan (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Uzbekistan increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tajikistan (+52.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tajikistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +52.3% from 2012-2021. Turkmenistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-15.5%) and Kyrgyzstan (-16.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Uzbekistan (+58 p.p.) and Tajikistan (+15 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -7.6%, -20.9% and -43% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported calcium carbonate in Central Asia, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tajikistan ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 9.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Uzbekistan stood at +13.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tajikistan (+52.3% per year) and Kazakhstan (-13.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate temperate growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the import price increased by 67%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
