The Central Asian market for wood boxes, crates and cable drums fell to $X in 2022, waning by -2.1% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a resilient increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, shipments abroad of wood boxes, crates and cable drums decreased by -22% to X units, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 87%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wood box and cable drum exports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 137% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Kazakhstan (X units), Uzbekistan (X units) and Tajikistan (X units) represented roughly 98% of total exports in 2022. Mongolia (X units) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +20.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Tajikistan ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 98% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Tajikistan, with a CAGR of +42.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -8.1% against the previous year. Export price indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, wood box and cable drum export price increased by +71.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 47%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Kazakhstan ($X per unit) and Uzbekistan ($X per unit), while Mongolia ($X per unit) and Tajikistan ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.

Wood box and cable drum imports contracted to X units in 2022, with a decrease of -5.5% on 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 159% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wood box and cable drum imports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 160% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Kazakhstan was the major importing country with an import of about X units, which reached 69% of total imports. Mongolia (X units) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kyrgyzstan (7.7%) and Uzbekistan (7.4%). Turkmenistan (X units) took a little share of total imports.

Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mongolia (+31.0%) and Kyrgyzstan (+12.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mongolia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +31.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Uzbekistan (-8.0%) and Turkmenistan (-9.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mongolia (+11 p.p.), Uzbekistan (+7.4 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -7.2% and -13.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wood boxes, crates and cable drums in Central Asia, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Mongolia, with an 8.1% share.

In Kazakhstan, wood box and cable drum imports decreased by an average annual rate of -5.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kyrgyzstan (+15.0% per year) and Mongolia (+23.1% per year).

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 86% against the previous year. Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkmenistan ($X per unit), while Uzbekistan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
