Cashew Nut Market Size in Central Asia

The Central Asian cashew nut market declined sharply to $X in 2021, shrinking by -28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a prominent increase. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Cashew Nut Production in Central Asia

In value terms, cashew nut production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +48.9% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

Tajikistan (X tons) remains the largest cashew nut producing country in Central Asia, comprising approx. 93% of total volume. Moreover, cashew nut production in Tajikistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Uzbekistan (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume in Tajikistan stood at +1.9%.

Exports in Central Asia

For the fourth year in a row, Central Asia recorded decline in shipments abroad of cashew nuts, which decreased by 0% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 4,642% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cashew nut exports stood at $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 2,188% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -68.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 201% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Uzbekistan.

From 2014 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Uzbekistan amounted to -7.3% per year.

Imports in Central Asia

In 2021, cashew nut imports in Central Asia shrank significantly to X tons, dropping by -88.1% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports showed a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 498%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cashew nut imports shrank remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 450%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 82% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Tajikistan (X kg), mixing up a 15% share of total imports. Mongolia (X kg) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Kazakhstan decreased at an average annual rate of -6.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tajikistan (+65.1%) and Mongolia (+23.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tajikistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +65.1% from 2012-2021. Tajikistan (+15 p.p.) and Mongolia (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -17.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cashew nuts in Central Asia, comprising 87% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tajikistan ($X), with an 8.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kazakhstan amounted to +1.8%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tajikistan (+22.5% per year) and Mongolia (+23.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 24% against the previous year. Import price indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, cashew nut import price decreased by -6.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 48%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+9.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
