From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, caustic soda imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a slight decline. In 2021, Kazakhstan (X tons) was the key importer of caustic soda, mixing up 58% of total imports. Uzbekistan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 27% share, followed by Turkmenistan (7%). Kyrgyzstan (X tons), Tajikistan (X tons) and Mongolia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Kazakhstan decreased at an average annual rate of -1.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tajikistan (+11.2%), Turkmenistan (+7.3%) and Mongolia (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tajikistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +11.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Uzbekistan (-3.3%) and Kyrgyzstan (-3.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkmenistan (+3.8 p.p.) and Tajikistan (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Uzbekistan saw its share reduced by -4.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest caustic soda importing markets in Central Asia were Kazakhstan ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a combined 90% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Turkmenistan, Mongolia and Tajikistan, which together accounted for a further 9.9%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Mongolia, with a CAGR of +9.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 19% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 30% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while Turkmenistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
