Cereal Germ Market Size in Central Asia

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Central Asian cereal germ market, when its value decreased by -9.7% to $X. As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Kazakhstan.

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of cereal germ, when their volume decreased by -23.9% to X tons. In general, imports, however, posted a slight expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 140% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cereal germ imports contracted markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, posted prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 254%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

Kyrgyzstan was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 53% of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) held a 34% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tajikistan (7.9%). Mongolia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Kyrgyzstan (with a CAGR of +114.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Kyrgyzstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cereal germ in Central Asia, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Tajikistan, with a 4.5% share.

In Kyrgyzstan, cereal germ imports increased at an average annual rate of +154.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (-3.8% per year) and Tajikistan (+15.5% per year).

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 104%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (+18.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
