Other Cereals Market Size in Central Asia

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the Central Asian other cereals market, when its value decreased by -8.3% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of other cereals production was Kazakhstan (X tons), comprising approx. 95% of total volume. Moreover, other cereals production in Kazakhstan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Uzbekistan (X tons), more than tenfold.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 77% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. Exports in Central Asia

In 2021, approx. X tons of other cerealses were exported in Central Asia; waning by -23.7% on 2020 figures. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 1,527% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, other cereals exports shrank notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 2,210% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

Kazakhstan was the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 89% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Turkmenistan (X tons), constituting an 11% share of total exports.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the other cerealses exports, with a CAGR of +36.2% from 2012 to 2021. Turkmenistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Turkmenistan (+11 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Kazakhstan (-11.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest other cereals supplier in Central Asia, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkmenistan ($X), with a 9.5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Kazakhstan totaled +33.1%.

In 2021, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -1.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 54%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +30.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tajikistan (+53.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tajikistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +53.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mongolia (-14.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kazakhstan (+25 p.p.) and Tajikistan (+22 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Mongolia (-47.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported other cerealses in Central Asia, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tajikistan ($X), with a 13% share of total imports.

In Kazakhstan, other cereals imports increased at an average annual rate of +16.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tajikistan (+44.5% per year) and Mongolia (+1.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -27.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a abrupt shrinkage.
