Market Size for Cherries and Sour Cherries in Central Asia
The Central Asian cherry and sour cherry market contracted to $X in 2022, falling by -4.1% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +8.7% against 2020 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Production of Cherries and Sour Cherries in Central Asia
In value terms, cherry and sour cherry production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a tangible increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 120%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Uzbekistan (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of cherry and sour cherry production, comprising approx. 96% of total volume. It was followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), with a 2.3% share of total production.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Uzbekistan stood at +10.8%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Kazakhstan (-5.8% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (-1.5% per year).
In 2022, the average cherry and sour cherry yield in Central Asia rose slightly to X tons per ha, picking up by 2.9% compared with 2021. The yield indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cherry and sour cherry yield decreased by -3.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the yield increased by 16%. Over the period under review, the cherry and sour cherry yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The cherry and sour cherry harvested area fell to X ha in 2022, which is down by -6.1% compared with 2021 figures. The total harvested area indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cherry and sour cherry harvested area increased by +44.3% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 14%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha, and then shrank in the following year.
Exports of Cherries and Sour Cherries
Exports in Central Asia
After two years of growth, shipments abroad of cherries and sour cherries decreased by -51% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 6,392% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cherry and sour cherry exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 11,671%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Uzbekistan was the main exporter of cherries and sour cherries in Central Asia, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 87% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons), mixing up a 10% share of total exports. Tajikistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cherry and sour cherry exports from Uzbekistan stood at -10.6%. At the same time, Tajikistan (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tajikistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +1.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (-5.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Uzbekistan increased by +87 percentage points.
In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) remains the largest cherry and sour cherry supplier in Central Asia, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 5.7% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Uzbekistan stood at -12.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kyrgyzstan (-6.1% per year) and Tajikistan (-7.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -14.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, posted temperate growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 81% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (-0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Cherries and Sour Cherries
Imports in Central Asia
After two years of growth, overseas purchases of cherries and sour cherries decreased by -68.2% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a perceptible increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 171%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cherry and sour cherry imports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a modest increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 287% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Kazakhstan was the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 85% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons), constituting a 15% share of total imports.
Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+45.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +45.0% from 2012-2022. While the share of Kyrgyzstan (+14 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Kazakhstan (-10.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cherries and sour cherries in Central Asia, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 26% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kazakhstan totaled -1.1%.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, declining by -9.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 43% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan amounted to $X per ton.
