Chestnut Market Size in Central Asia

The Central Asian chestnut market reduced modestly to $X in 2021, shrinking by -3% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine-year period. In 2020, after two years of decline, there was decline in shipments abroad of chestnuts, when their volume decreased by 0% to X kg. Overall, exports recorded a sharp decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 87% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2020, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chestnut exports stood at $X in 2020. In general, exports saw a sharp decline. The smallest decline of -45% was in 2014. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2020, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2020, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 200% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 200%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2020, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Kyrgyzstan.

From 2013 to 2020, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Kyrgyzstan amounted to +6.6% per year.

In 2021, purchases abroad of chestnuts decreased by -81.4% to X kg for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 249% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chestnut imports fell markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 175%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Kazakhstan (X kg) represented the key importer of chestnuts, achieving 87% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Mongolia (X kg), committing a 13% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to chestnut imports into Kazakhstan stood at -10.4%. At the same time, Mongolia (+8.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mongolia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +8.9% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Mongolia increased by +11 percentage points.
