For the third year in a row, the Central Asian chicken meat market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 8.4% to $X in 2021. The total production indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +62.6% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 27% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined modestly in the following year.

The country with the largest volume of chicken meat production was Kazakhstan (X tons), comprising approx. 59% of total volume. Moreover, chicken meat production in Kazakhstan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Uzbekistan (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Tajikistan (X tons), with a 6.9% share.

In Kazakhstan, chicken meat production expanded at an average annual rate of +8.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Uzbekistan (+12.7% per year) and Tajikistan (+17.0% per year).

In 2021, the average yield of chicken meat in Central Asia soared to X kg per head, rising by 17% compared with the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the yield reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, approx. X heads of animals slaughtered for chicken meat production in Central Asia; remaining stable against 2020 figures. The total number of producing animals indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, number of animals slaughtered for chicken meat production increased by +87.0% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, this number hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Chicken Meat Exports

Exports in Central Asia

After three years of growth, overseas shipments of chicken meat decreased by -3.1% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 105%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

In value terms, chicken meat exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 130% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from Kazakhstan (X tons), together accounting for 98% of total export.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chicken meat exports, with a CAGR of +27.1% from 2012 to 2021. While the share of Kazakhstan (+3.8 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) also remains the largest chicken meat supplier in Central Asia.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 23% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 40%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Kazakhstan.

Imports in Central Asia

In 2021, the amount of chicken meat imported in Central Asia rose significantly to X tons, growing by 13% on 2020 figures. Total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +71.1% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, chicken meat imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +85.2% against 2014 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan was the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 48% of total imports. Uzbekistan (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Turkmenistan (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Mongolia (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 52% share of total imports.

Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+101.5%), Turkmenistan (+21.6%) and Mongolia (+16.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +101.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (-4.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+20 p.p.), Turkmenistan (+10 p.p.) and Mongolia (+3.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Kazakhstan (-12.4 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (-13.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chicken meat in Central Asia, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with a 13% share.

In Kazakhstan, chicken meat imports declined by an average annual rate of -1.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uzbekistan (+114.7% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (-0.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a mild reduction. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while Turkmenistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
