Chicory Market Size in Central Asia

In 2021, the Central Asian chicory market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2012, thus ending a eight-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a abrupt setback. In 2021, shipments abroad of chicory decreased by -43.2% to X tons, falling for the fourth year in a row after three years of growth. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 297%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chicory exports reduced to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 39%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

Exports by Country

Uzbekistan represented the largest exporter of chicory in Central Asia, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 79% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X kg), comprising a 21% share of total exports.

Exports from Uzbekistan increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+21.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +21.1% from 2012-2021. Kazakhstan (+16 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Uzbekistan saw its share reduced by -16.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) remains the largest chicory supplier in Central Asia, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 31% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Uzbekistan amounted to +4.2%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 59% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a modest expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 77%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+2.8%).

Chicory Imports

Imports in Central Asia

In 2021, overseas purchases of chicory decreased by -84.3% to X kg for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports showed a precipitous setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 604%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chicory imports contracted markedly to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a precipitous shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 1,559% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the one major importers of chicory, namely Kazakhstan, represented more than two-thirds of total import.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chicory imports, with a CAGR of -21.9% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest importers remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chicory in Central Asia.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kazakhstan stood at -22.8%.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 4.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a slight curtailment.
