The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, chlorides exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 923%. Exports by Country
Kazakhstan was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 68% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Turkmenistan (X tons), creating a 32% share of total exports.
Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride) exports, with a CAGR of +9.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Turkmenistan (+9.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkmenistan increased by +32 percentage points.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest chlorides supplier in Central Asia, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkmenistan ($X), with a 30% share of total exports.
In Kazakhstan, chlorides exports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a perceptible curtailment. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Turkmenistan stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkmenistan (+11.1%).

Imports in Central Asia
In 2021, overseas purchases of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride) decreased by -18% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. Total imports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -38.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 49% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, chlorides imports amounted to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, posted notable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Kazakhstan (X tons) was the largest importer of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride), generating 65% of total imports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Turkmenistan (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 29% share of total imports. Uzbekistan (X tons) and Mongolia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Kazakhstan decreased at an average annual rate of -1.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Turkmenistan (+24.6%) and Kyrgyzstan (+9.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkmenistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +24.6% from 2012-2021. Uzbekistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mongolia (-12.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkmenistan (+12 p.p.), Kyrgyzstan (+7.5 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+3.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Mongolia (-5.3 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (-18 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride) in Central Asia, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkmenistan, with an 8.8% share.
In Kazakhstan, chlorides imports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kyrgyzstan (+7.4% per year) and Turkmenistan (+20.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Turkmenistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mongolia (+13.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
