Exports in Central Asia

In 2022, shipments abroad of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres increased by 6,585% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 62,900% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 426,100%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Uzbekistan prevails in fibres structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 97% of total exports in 2022. Kazakhstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Uzbekistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+42.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +42.6% from 2012-2022. While the share of Uzbekistan (+97 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Kazakhstan (-97 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) emerged as the largest coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre supplier in Central Asia, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 31% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Uzbekistan was relatively modest.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -90.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a precipitous slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 577%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (-1.2%).

Imports in Central Asia

In 2022, the amount of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres imported in Central Asia skyrocketed to X tons, picking up by 30% against 2021. In general, imports showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 265%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 171%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Uzbekistan (X tons) represented the largest importer of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres, creating 75% of total imports. Turkmenistan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 16% share, followed by Kazakhstan (8.3%).

Uzbekistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres imports, with a CAGR of +64.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Turkmenistan (+33.2%) and Kazakhstan (+8.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Uzbekistan (+75 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -59.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres in Central Asia, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkmenistan ($X), with a 19% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Uzbekistan totaled +68.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkmenistan (+41.9% per year) and Kazakhstan (+2.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -6.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 75%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkmenistan ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkmenistan (+6.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
