Coffee Extract Market Size in Central Asia

In 2021, the Central Asian coffee extract market increased by 7% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 8% against the previous year. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, coffee extract production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 13%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Central Asia

In 2021, approx. X tons of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates were exported in Central Asia; shrinking by -31.6% against the year before. Total exports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -38.7% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 51%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, coffee extract exports contracted sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 49%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Kazakhstan (X tons) represented roughly 99% of total exports in 2021.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the coffee extracts, essences and concentrates exports, with a CAGR of +2.9% from 2012 to 2021. Kazakhstan (+3.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) also remains the largest coffee extract supplier in Central Asia.

In Kazakhstan, coffee extract exports decreased by an average annual rate of -9.7% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -6.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 0.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Kazakhstan.

Imports in Central Asia

In 2021, approx. X tons of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates were imported in Central Asia; growing by 22% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, imports continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, coffee extract imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Kazakhstan (X tons) represented the key importer of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates, committing 47% of total imports. Uzbekistan (X tons) held a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Mongolia (13%), Turkmenistan (11%) and Tajikistan (4.6%). Kyrgyzstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+25.6%), Tajikistan (+11.9%), Mongolia (+11.0%), Turkmenistan (+7.5%) and Kyrgyzstan (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +25.6% from 2012-2021. While the share of Uzbekistan (+20 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Turkmenistan (-2.3 p.p.), Kyrgyzstan (-3.1 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (-16.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported coffee extracts, essences and concentrates in Central Asia, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Mongolia, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kazakhstan was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (+29.1% per year) and Mongolia (+9.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a perceptible shrinkage. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+2.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
