The Central Asian coffee substitutes market rose significantly to $X in 2022, growing by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, approx. X tons of coffee substitutes containing coffee were exported in Central Asia; dropping by -60.9% on the year before. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 4,086%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank markedly in the following year.
In value terms, coffee substitutes exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 261%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Uzbekistan dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 97% of total exports in 2022. Mongolia (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Uzbekistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the coffee substitutes containing coffee exports, with a CAGR of +496.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mongolia (+26.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Uzbekistan (+97 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Mongolia saw its share reduced by -96.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) emerged as the largest coffee substitutes supplier in Central Asia, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mongolia ($X), with a 9.4% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Uzbekistan amounted to +221.3%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 480% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt decrease. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mongolia (-5.6%).

Imports in Central Asia
In 2022, purchases abroad of coffee substitutes containing coffee increased by 1.9% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, imports continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 664% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
In value terms, coffee substitutes imports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 662% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.
Imports by Country
Kazakhstan represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 72% of total imports. Mongolia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons). All these countries together took near 25% share of total imports. Turkmenistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to coffee substitutes imports into Kazakhstan stood at +24.3%. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+28.1%) and Mongolia (+20.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +28.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Turkmenistan (-2.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Kazakhstan (+15 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (+7.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Turkmenistan saw its share reduced by -18.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported coffee substitutes containing coffee in Central Asia, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mongolia ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkmenistan, with a 2.6% share.
In Kazakhstan, coffee substitutes imports expanded at an average annual rate of +37.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mongolia (+25.3% per year) and Turkmenistan (-0.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -6.9% against the previous year. Import price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, coffee substitutes import price increased by +10.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 22% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkmenistan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+10.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
