For the third consecutive year, Central Asia recorded growth in purchases abroad of copper wire, which increased by 59% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 1,182%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Imports by Country
In 2021, Kazakhstan (X tons) represented the key importer of copper wire, making up 76% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), mixing up an 18% share of total imports. The following importers - Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Turkmenistan (X tons) - together made up 5.8% of total imports.

Uzbekistan (+18 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+3.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Turkmenistan saw its share reduced by -14.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported copper wire in Central Asia, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkmenistan, with a 1.6% share.
In Kazakhstan, copper wire imports increased at an average annual rate of +31.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uzbekistan (+95.5% per year) and Turkmenistan (+2.8% per year).
