Corrugated Paper Market Size in Central Asia

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in the Central Asian corrugated paper market, when its value decreased by less than 0.1% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a slight reduction. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, corrugated paper production reduced slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a slight setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 27%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Central Asia

In 2021, shipments abroad of corrugated paper and paperboard increased by 93% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, recorded a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 336% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, corrugated paper exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 323%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Kyrgyzstan represented the main exporter of corrugated paper and paperboard in Central Asia, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 66% of total exports in 2021. Kazakhstan (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons). All these countries together held near 34% share of total exports.

Exports from Kyrgyzstan increased at an average annual rate of +11.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+84.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +84.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-17.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan increased by +48 and +13 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Kyrgyzstan ($X) remains the largest corrugated paper supplier in Central Asia, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 26% share of total exports.

In Kyrgyzstan, corrugated paper exports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (-14.7% per year) and Uzbekistan (+74.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 3.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 63%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Central Asia

In 2021, overseas purchases of corrugated paper and paperboard were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, corrugated paper imports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 68%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Kazakhstan (X tons) was the major importer of corrugated paper and paperboard, constituting 80% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), generating a 12% share of total imports. Mongolia (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Tajikistan (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to corrugated paper imports into Kazakhstan stood at +13.1%. At the same time, Tajikistan (+42.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tajikistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +42.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Uzbekistan (-1.5%), Mongolia (-8.5%) and Kyrgyzstan (-22.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan increased by +44, +12 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Mongolia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 97% share of total imports. Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 3.1%.

Tajikistan, with a CAGR of +64.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -26.7% against the previous year. Import price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, corrugated paper import price decreased by -31.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 44% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
