In 2021, the Central Asian cotton yarn market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2012, thus ending a eight-year declining trend. Uzbekistan represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 83% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Turkmenistan (X tons), making up a 12% share of total exports. Tajikistan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Uzbekistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cotton yarn exports, with a CAGR of +222.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tajikistan (+14.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Turkmenistan (-1.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Uzbekistan increased by +83 percentage points.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) remains the largest cotton yarn supplier in Central Asia, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkmenistan ($X), with a 7.5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Uzbekistan totaled +222.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkmenistan (-5.0% per year) and Tajikistan (+12.6% per year).

In 2021, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 55% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cotton yarn imports fell remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a buoyant increase. In value terms, Kyrgyzstan ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Uzbekistan ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 94% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Kazakhstan, with a CAGR of +26.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 34% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a slight reduction. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Mongolia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
