Cow Peas Market Size in Central Asia

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in the Central Asian cow peas market, when its value decreased by -47.5% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, posted prominent growth. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then contracted notably in the following year.

Cow Peas Production in Central Asia

In value terms, cow peas production dropped significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 217% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of cow peas production was Uzbekistan (X tons), accounting for 81% of total volume. Moreover, cow peas production in Uzbekistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Turkmenistan (X tons), sevenfold. Tajikistan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 6.3% share.

In Uzbekistan, cow peas production expanded at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Turkmenistan (+1.3% per year) and Tajikistan (+1.7% per year).

Cow Peas Exports

Exports in Central Asia

In 2022, overseas shipments of cow peas (dry) increased by 93% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 6,685% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cow peas exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 9,281%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Uzbekistan represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 85% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Turkmenistan (X tons), constituting a 15% share of total exports.

Uzbekistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cow peas (dry) exports, with a CAGR of +122.8% from 2017 to 2022. Turkmenistan (-50.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkmenistan (+15 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2017-2022, the share of Uzbekistan (-14.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) emerged as the largest cow peas supplier in Central Asia, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkmenistan ($X), with a 20% share of total exports.

From 2017 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Uzbekistan totaled +137.5%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -18.5% against the previous year. Export price indicated a strong increase from 2017 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the last five years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 38%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped notably in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkmenistan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan amounted to $X per ton.

From 2017 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+6.6%).

Imports in Central Asia

Cow peas imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2022, with an increase of 118% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 421%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cow peas imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 1,101% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Kyrgyzstan dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 91% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), comprising an 8.8% share of total imports.

Kyrgyzstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cow peas (dry) imports, with a CAGR of +20.9% from 2012 to 2022. Kazakhstan (-27.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kyrgyzstan (+91 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Kazakhstan (-91.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Kyrgyzstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cow peas (dry) in Central Asia, comprising 84% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 16% share of total imports.

In Kyrgyzstan, cow peas imports expanded at an average annual rate of +22.5% over the period from 2012-2022.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -17.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 130%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan totaled $X per ton.
