Exports in Central Asia

In 2022, shipments abroad of crude palm oil was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 471% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, crude palm oil exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 479% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Kazakhstan (X tons) was the key exporter of crude palm oil in Central Asia, creating 100% of total export.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the crude palm oil exports, with a CAGR of -15.9% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) also remains the largest crude palm oil supplier in Central Asia.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kazakhstan amounted to -5.8%.

In 2022, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -11.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 68%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Kazakhstan.

In 2022, approx. X tons of crude palm oil were imported in Central Asia; reducing by -8.4% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 357% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, crude palm oil imports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 369%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Kyrgyzstan dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 96% of total imports in 2022. Kazakhstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Kyrgyzstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the crude palm oil imports, with a CAGR of +4.7% from 2012 to 2022. Kazakhstan (-18.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kyrgyzstan (+40 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Kazakhstan (-22.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Kyrgyzstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported crude palm oil in Central Asia, comprising 96% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 2.6% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Kyrgyzstan was relatively modest.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -2.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (-4.6%).
