Kazakhstan (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of powdered milk production, comprising approx. 84% of total volume. Moreover, powdered milk production in Kazakhstan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Kyrgyzstan (X tons), fivefold.

Exports in Central Asia

For the fifth year in a row, Central Asia recorded growth in shipments abroad of powdered milk, which increased by 3.4% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 662%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, powdered milk exports rose modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 431% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan represented the major exporter of powdered milk in Central Asia, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 71% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons), committing a 28% share of total exports.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the powdered milk exports, with a CAGR of +47.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+5.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Kazakhstan increased by +63 percentage points.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 32%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (+0.6%).

Imports in Central Asia

In 2022, imports of powdered milk in Central Asia expanded significantly to X tons, growing by 14% on the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, powdered milk imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +18.4% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 56%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Kazakhstan (X tons) was the main importer of powdered milk, creating 71% of total imports. Mongolia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Uzbekistan (11%). The following importers - Turkmenistan (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons) - each recorded a 3.5% share of total imports.

Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of powdered milk. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+49.0%), Kyrgyzstan (+9.9%), Mongolia (+2.4%) and Turkmenistan (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +49.0% from 2012-2022. While the share of Uzbekistan (+11 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Kazakhstan (-12.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported powdered milk in Central Asia, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mongolia ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 9.9% share.

In Kazakhstan, powdered milk imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mongolia (+2.5% per year) and Uzbekistan (+61.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 14% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 31%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
