In 2021, the Central Asian dried onion market increased by 24% to $X, rising for the third consecutive year after four years of decline. Overall, consumption enjoyed a strong increase. Uzbekistan dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 98% of total exports in 2021. Tajikistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Uzbekistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the dried onions exports, with a CAGR of +249.7% from 2012 to 2021. Tajikistan (-3.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+98 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Tajikistan (-96.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) remains the largest dried onion supplier in Central Asia, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tajikistan ($X), with a 5.6% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Uzbekistan stood at +151.8%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -16.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 94%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Tajikistan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan amounted to $X per ton.

After four years of growth, overseas purchases of dried onions decreased by -85.1% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 400% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, dried onion imports fell sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The purchases of the one major importers of dried onions, namely Kazakhstan, represented more than two-thirds of total import.
