For the third year in a row, the Central Asian electric locomotive market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -82.6% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption showed a sharp curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the market value increased by 9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of electric locomotives increased by 363% to X units, rising for the seventh consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports showed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 847% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, electric locomotive exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 374% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

The biggest shipments were from Kazakhstan (X units), together resulting at 99.9% of total export.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the electric locomotives exports, with a CAGR of +44.5% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) also remains the largest electric locomotive supplier in Central Asia.

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per unit in 2021, waning by -4.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a significant decrease. For the third year in a row, Central Asia recorded decline in purchases abroad of electric locomotives, which decreased by -32.8% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 2,368%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, electric locomotive imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 1,190% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan prevails in imports structure, reaching X units, which was near 93% of total imports in 2021. The following importers - Uzbekistan (X units) and Mongolia (X units) - each finished at a 6.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to electric locomotive imports into Kazakhstan stood at +25.4%. At the same time, Mongolia (+31.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mongolia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +31.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Uzbekistan (-51.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Kazakhstan (+5.9 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+3.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported electric locomotives in Central Asia, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 31% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Uzbekistan amounted to +46.2%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (+14.8% per year) and Mongolia (+33.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per unit in 2021, picking up by 94% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a pronounced increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 218%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per unit), while Mongolia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+201.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
