Exports in Central Asia

In 2021, shipments abroad of ferro-cerium and pyrophoric alloys was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, recorded a deep setback. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ferro-cerium and pyrophoric alloys exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded prominent growth. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Kyrgyzstan prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 98% of total exports in 2021. Kazakhstan (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Kyrgyzstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the ferro-cerium and pyrophoric alloys exports, with a CAGR of +50.9% from 2012 to 2021. Kazakhstan (-41.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kyrgyzstan (+98 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Kazakhstan (-97.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Kyrgyzstan ($X) emerged as the largest ferro-cerium and pyrophoric alloys supplier in Central Asia, comprising 100% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 0.4% share of total exports.

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 591% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a significant increase. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, approx. X tons of ferro-cerium and pyrophoric alloys were imported in Central Asia; declining by -32.2% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded pronounced growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 128% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ferro-cerium and pyrophoric alloys imports fell dramatically to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 237%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Kazakhstan was the largest importer of ferro-cerium and pyrophoric alloys in Central Asia, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 74% of total imports in 2021. Uzbekistan (X tons) held a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kyrgyzstan (6.4%). Mongolia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to ferro-cerium and pyrophoric alloys imports into Kazakhstan stood at +1.1%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+424.3%), Kyrgyzstan (+22.7%) and Mongolia (+18.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ferro-cerium and pyrophoric alloys in Central Asia, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with an 8.4% share.

In Kazakhstan, ferro-cerium and pyrophoric alloys imports shrank by an average annual rate of -7.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (+397.2% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+24.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the import price increased by 48% against the previous year. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mongolia (+10.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
