The Central Asian flat-rolled steel products market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after four years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption showed a pronounced shrinkage. Exports in Central Asia
For the third consecutive year, Central Asia recorded decline in shipments abroad of flat-rolled products of iron or non-alloy steel, which decreased by -1.2% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 37% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, flat-rolled steel products exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a noticeable reduction. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the one major exporters of flat-rolled products of iron or non-alloy steel, namely Kazakhstan, represented more than two-thirds of total export.
Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the flat-rolled products of iron or non-alloy steel exports, with a CAGR of -2.7% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) also remains the largest flat-rolled steel products supplier in Central Asia.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kazakhstan amounted to -3.8%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a mild decrease. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Kazakhstan.
From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Kazakhstan amounted to -1.2% per year.

Imports in Central Asia
In 2021, approx. X tons of flat-rolled products of iron or non-alloy steel were imported in Central Asia; waning by -30.8% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, recorded buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 251% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, flat-rolled steel products imports fell to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, posted resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 244%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Uzbekistan represented the main importer of flat-rolled products of iron or non-alloy steel in Central Asia, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 68% of total imports in 2021. Kazakhstan (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Turkmenistan (X tons) and Tajikistan (X tons). All these countries together took near 24% share of total imports. The following importers - Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Mongolia (X tons) - each resulted at a 7.9% share of total imports.
Imports into Uzbekistan increased at an average annual rate of +40.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Turkmenistan (+56.7%), Mongolia (+16.8%) and Tajikistan (+11.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkmenistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +56.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-1.8%) and Kyrgyzstan (-7.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Uzbekistan (+57 p.p.) and Turkmenistan (+5.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -24.8% and -37% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported flat-rolled products of iron or non-alloy steel in Central Asia, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkmenistan, with a 4.6% share.
In Uzbekistan, flat-rolled steel products imports expanded at an average annual rate of +33.7% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (-0.7% per year) and Turkmenistan (+48.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 27% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible setback. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+1.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
