Fluorspar Market Size in Central Asia

In 2021, the Central Asian fluorspar market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption saw a buoyant increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

After five years of growth, overseas shipments of fluorspar decreased by -4.2% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports, however, posted temperate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 27,699% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, fluorspar exports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a perceptible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 23,031% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Mongolia prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 97% of total exports in 2021. Kazakhstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Mongolia increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+42.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +42.4% from 2012-2021. Kazakhstan (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Mongolia saw its share reduced by -2.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Mongolia ($X) remains the largest fluorspar supplier in Central Asia, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 4.5% share of total exports.

In Mongolia, fluorspar exports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -1.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the export price increased by 27% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Mongolia totaled $X per ton.

Imports in Central Asia

In 2021, supplies from abroad of fluorspar decreased by -8.9% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed pronounced growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 192%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fluorspar imports shrank slightly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, posted mild growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 91% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

Uzbekistan (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) dominates imports structure, together comprising 95% of total imports. Turkmenistan (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +95.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported fluorspar in Central Asia, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 28% share of total imports.

In Uzbekistan, fluorspar imports expanded at an average annual rate of +104.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+15.0% per year) and Turkmenistan (+24.4% per year).
