The Central Asian baby food market expanded rapidly to $X in 2021, growing by 6.4% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced decrease. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, purchases abroad of food preparations for infants increased by 2.3% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 21%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, baby food imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Kazakhstan represented the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 50% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons) and Tajikistan (X tons), together achieving a 41% share of total imports. Mongolia (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Turkmenistan (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +20.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Tajikistan ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 90% of total imports.

Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +22.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 26% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
