Imports in Central Asia

For the fourth year in a row, Central Asia recorded growth in supplies from abroad of frozen cuttlefishes, which increased by 3.2% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, frozen cuttlefishes imports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 83%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan prevails in imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 83% of total imports in 2021. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Uzbekistan (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 13% share of total imports. The following importers - Turkmenistan (X tons) and Mongolia (X tons) - each accounted for a 3.6% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to frozen cuttlefishes imports into Kazakhstan stood at -2.6%. At the same time, Mongolia (+31.8%) and Uzbekistan (+20.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mongolia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +31.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Turkmenistan (-3.8%) and Kyrgyzstan (-11.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Uzbekistan (+5.7 p.p.) and Mongolia (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kyrgyzstan saw its share reduced by -8.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported frozen cuttlefishes in Central Asia, comprising 86% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 5.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 3.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kazakhstan stood at -8.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kyrgyzstan (-11.0% per year) and Uzbekistan (+28.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 9.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 47%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mongolia (+11.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
