The Central Asian frozen potato market rose sharply to $X in 2021, surging by 5.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate prominent growth. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, frozen potato production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 65% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

Exports in Central Asia
In 2021, overseas shipments of frozen potatoes decreased by -43.3% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 119%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, frozen potato exports shrank markedly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 204% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Kazakhstan (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons) represented the major exporter of frozen potatoes in Central Asia, creating 99% of total export.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Kazakhstan (with a CAGR of +71.7%).
In value terms, the largest frozen potato supplying countries in Central Asia were Kazakhstan ($X) and Kyrgyzstan ($X).
Kazakhstan, with a CAGR of +51.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 33% against the previous year. Export price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, frozen potato export price increased by +43.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 59% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (+3.5%).

Imports in Central Asia
In 2021, imports of frozen potatoes in Central Asia skyrocketed to X tons, jumping by 24% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports saw prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, frozen potato imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 39%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Kazakhstan was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 62% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Mongolia (X tons), together mixing up a 34% share of total imports. The following importers - Turkmenistan (X tons) and Tajikistan (X tons) - each resulted at a 3.7% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to frozen potato imports into Kazakhstan stood at +13.2%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+82.1%), Kyrgyzstan (+28.6%), Turkmenistan (+13.7%), Tajikistan (+13.5%) and Mongolia (+11.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +82.1% from 2012-2021. Uzbekistan (+15 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (+7.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Mongolia and Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -3.4% and -18.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported frozen potatoes in Central Asia, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Mongolia, with an 8.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Kazakhstan totaled +12.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (+77.3% per year) and Mongolia (+8.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 5.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a slight setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 8.1%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while Turkmenistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (-0.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
