Fructose Market Size in Central Asia

The Central Asian fructose market reached $X in 2021, surging by 3.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a noticeable contraction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Fructose Production in Central Asia

In value terms, fructose production amounted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Central Asia

Fructose exports fell remarkably to X tons in 2021, with a decrease of -76% compared with the previous year. In general, exports recorded a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 112% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fructose exports shrank sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 96% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Kazakhstan (X tons) was the key exporter of fructose and fructose syrup, creating 66% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X kg), Uzbekistan (X kg) and Mongolia (X kg), together making up a 31% share of total exports. Tajikistan (X kg) held a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Kazakhstan decreased at an average annual rate of -3.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mongolia (+7.3%) and Kyrgyzstan (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mongolia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +7.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Uzbekistan (-3.3%) and Tajikistan (-23.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kyrgyzstan (+8.1 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+7.2 p.p.) and Mongolia (+3.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Tajikistan (-19.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest fructose supplier in Central Asia, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Mongolia, with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Kazakhstan amounted to -7.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kyrgyzstan (+2.9% per year) and Mongolia (+2.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 48% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Central Asia

Fructose imports surged to X tons in 2021, picking up by 108% against 2020 figures. Overall, imports saw a prominent increase. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fructose imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a remarkable increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Mongolia (X tons) represented the key importer of fructose and fructose syrup, mixing up 59% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons), together creating a 33% share of total imports. Tajikistan (X tons), Turkmenistan (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Mongolia increased at an average annual rate of +31.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tajikistan (+36.1%), Uzbekistan (+24.3%), Turkmenistan (+19.3%) and Kyrgyzstan (+9.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tajikistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +36.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-2.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mongolia (+41 p.p.), Uzbekistan (+15 p.p.) and Tajikistan (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Kazakhstan (-59.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mongolia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported fructose and fructose syrup in Central Asia, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 21% share.

In Mongolia, fructose imports increased at an average annual rate of +30.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (-3.6% per year) and Uzbekistan (+38.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -1.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 28%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Mongolia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+11.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
