Exports in Central Asia
In 2022, shipments abroad of ginger decreased by -76.1% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after six years of growth. Overall, exports showed a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 263%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, ginger exports declined remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a precipitous shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 117% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Kazakhstan dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 94% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X kg), creating a 6.4% share of total exports.
Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the ginger exports, with a CAGR of -8.9% from 2012 to 2022. Kyrgyzstan (-24.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Kazakhstan (+25 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Kyrgyzstan saw its share reduced by -24.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, the largest ginger supplying countries in Central Asia were Kazakhstan ($X) and Kyrgyzstan ($X).
Among the main exporting countries, Kyrgyzstan, with a CAGR of -16.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 8.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a significant decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 47%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (+11.2%).
Ginger Imports
Imports in Central Asia
For the fourth year in a row, Central Asia recorded growth in supplies from abroad of ginger, which increased by 49% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 608%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, ginger imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 656%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Kazakhstan represented the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 53% of total imports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 26% share, followed by Uzbekistan (17%). The following importers - Turkmenistan (X tons) and Mongolia (X tons) - each accounted for a 3.5% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to ginger imports into Kazakhstan stood at +44.7%. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+113.8%), Turkmenistan (+39.6%), Mongolia (+33.0%) and Uzbekistan (+30.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +113.8% from 2012-2022. While the share of Kyrgyzstan (+25 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+17 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Turkmenistan (-2.6 p.p.), Mongolia (-4.2 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (-33.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ginger in Central Asia, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with an 11% share.
In Kazakhstan, ginger imports increased at an average annual rate of +37.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kyrgyzstan (+73.0% per year) and Uzbekistan (+43.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -15% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 23% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while Turkmenistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+10.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
