The Central Asian gingerbread market dropped modestly to $X in 2022, waning by -5% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of gingerbread, when their volume increased by 289% to X tons. Overall, exports posted significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 988% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, gingerbread exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 622%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Uzbekistan represented the main exporter of gingerbread in Central Asia, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 62% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons) and Mongolia (X tons), together comprising a 38% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +248.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Mongolia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022.
Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +244.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -45.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 122% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mongolia (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Gingerbread Imports
Imports in Central Asia
In 2022, imports of gingerbread in Central Asia fell slightly to X tons, waning by -3.6% against 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 108%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year.
In value terms, gingerbread imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 85%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Kazakhstan prevails in imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 73% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons), Mongolia (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons), together creating a 22% share of total imports. Tajikistan (X tons) and Turkmenistan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to gingerbread imports into Kazakhstan stood at +12.4%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+39.3%), Kyrgyzstan (+13.7%), Mongolia (+13.3%) and Tajikistan (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +39.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Turkmenistan (-8.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan increased by +7.2, +6.3 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported gingerbread in Central Asia, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with an 8.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Mongolia, with a 7.5% share.
In Kazakhstan, gingerbread imports expanded at an average annual rate of +9.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uzbekistan (+43.6% per year) and Mongolia (+8.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 28% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible decline. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
