After four years of growth, the Central Asian glycosides and vegetable alkaloids market decreased by -13.6% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, glycosides and vegetable alkaloids production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a pronounced decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, approx. X tons of glycosides and vegetable alkaloids were exported in Central Asia; increasing by 2.4% on the year before. Over the period under review, exports showed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 380% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, glycosides and vegetable alkaloids exports declined to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 358%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan represented the main exporter of glycosides and vegetable alkaloids in Central Asia, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 79% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Tajikistan (X tons), mixing up a 14% share of total exports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +51.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+130.5%) and Kyrgyzstan (+43.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +130.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tajikistan (-2.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kazakhstan (+70 p.p.), Kyrgyzstan (+3.2 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Tajikistan (-75.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) remains the largest glycosides and vegetable alkaloids supplier in Central Asia, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with a 4.7% share.

In Uzbekistan, glycosides and vegetable alkaloids exports plunged by an average annual rate of -14.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (+21.3% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+8.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -13.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed pronounced growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 122%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tajikistan (-7.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports of Glycosides And Vegetable Alkaloids

Imports in Central Asia

In 2021, overseas purchases of glycosides and vegetable alkaloids decreased by -20.7% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 318%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, glycosides and vegetable alkaloids imports reduced to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 363%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of glycosides and vegetable alkaloids, namely Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons), committing a 6.7% share of total imports. Mongolia (X kg) and Turkmenistan (X kg) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Tajikistan (with a CAGR of +153.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X), Tajikistan ($X) and Kazakhstan ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 92% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Tajikistan, with a CAGR of +155.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 15% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 25%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Turkmenistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
