Grapefruit Market Size in Central Asia

The Central Asian grapefruit market fell remarkably to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -22.1% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 18%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

The country with the largest volume of grapefruit production was Uzbekistan (X tons), comprising approx. 100% of total volume.

In Uzbekistan, grapefruit production expanded at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012-2022.

In 2022, the average grapefruit yield in Central Asia declined slightly to X tons per ha, approximately mirroring the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the yield increased by 6.7%. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 11%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to grapefruit production reached the maximum at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Central Asia

After two years of growth, overseas shipments of grapefruits decreased by -22.1% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 1,336% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, grapefruit exports fell significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 2,073%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 91% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons), achieving a 9% share of total exports.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the grapefruits exports, with a CAGR of +15.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+7.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Kyrgyzstan increased by +9 percentage points.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest grapefruit supplier in Central Asia, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 7.3% share of total exports.

In Kazakhstan, grapefruit exports increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -5.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 51%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (+21.9%).

Imports in Central Asia

In 2022, grapefruit imports in Central Asia fell sharply to X tons, shrinking by -41.5% against the year before. Overall, imports, however, saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 209% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced notably in the following year.

In value terms, grapefruit imports fell sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a tangible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 201%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Kazakhstan (X tons) represented the major importer of grapefruits, achieving 56% of total imports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) took a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Uzbekistan (19%). The following importers - Tajikistan (X tons) and Turkmenistan (X tons) - each reached a 4.1% share of total imports.

Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of grapefruits. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+40.9%), Kyrgyzstan (+31.1%), Tajikistan (+15.4%) and Turkmenistan (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +40.9% from 2012-2022. While the share of Uzbekistan (+19 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (+18 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Kazakhstan (-38.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported grapefruits in Central Asia, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with an 18% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kazakhstan stood at -2.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uzbekistan (+48.6% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+24.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 9.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a noticeable shrinkage. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+5.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
