Grape Market Size in Central Asia
The Central Asian grape market dropped to $X in 2022, reducing by -5.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Grape Production in Central Asia
In value terms, grape production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Uzbekistan (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of grape production, comprising approx. 71% of total volume. Moreover, grape production in Uzbekistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Turkmenistan (X tons), fivefold. Tajikistan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Uzbekistan totaled +3.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkmenistan (+3.6% per year) and Tajikistan (+4.0% per year).
In 2022, the average grape yield in Central Asia declined slightly to X tons per ha, approximately equating the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of grapes production in Central Asia shrank slightly to X ha, leveling off at the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 4.2%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Grape Exports
Exports in Central Asia
In 2022, the amount of grapes exported in Central Asia soared to X tons, picking up by 43% on the year before. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 1,011%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, grape exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 2,686% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Uzbekistan prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 90% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tajikistan (X tons), generating a 5.9% share of total exports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to grape exports from Uzbekistan stood at +10.0%. At the same time, Tajikistan (+24.2%) and Kyrgyzstan (+23.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tajikistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +24.2% from 2012-2022. Uzbekistan (+90 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan saw its share reduced by -19.1% and -26% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) remains the largest grape supplier in Central Asia, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tajikistan ($X), with a 2.7% share of total exports.
In Uzbekistan, grape exports increased at an average annual rate of +14.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tajikistan (+19.1% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+11.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, waning by -10.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded slight growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 151%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Grape Imports
Imports in Central Asia
In 2022, purchases abroad of grapes was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports posted significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 281%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, grape imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 140%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Kazakhstan (X tons) represented the key importer of grapes, generating 74% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons), committing a 24% share of total imports.
Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +31.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+53.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +53.7% from 2012-2022. Kyrgyzstan (+18 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -15.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported grapes in Central Asia, comprising 84% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 14% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kazakhstan totaled +28.1%.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 20%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (-0.3%).
