Non-Wheat Groats Market Size in Central Asia
The Central Asian non-wheat groats market fell slightly to $X in 2021, declining by -2.9% against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a mild reduction. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat) decreased by -64.9% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after seven years of growth. In general, exports, however, saw resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 354% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, non-wheat groats exports dropped markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 402%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the one major exporters of groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat), namely Kazakhstan, represented more than two-thirds of total export.
Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat) exports, with a CAGR of +15.0% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) also remains the largest non-wheat groats supplier in Central Asia.
In Kazakhstan, non-wheat groats exports increased at an average annual rate of +12.4% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible descent. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Kazakhstan.
From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Kazakhstan amounted to -2.3% per year.

Imports in Central Asia
In 2021, overseas purchases of groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat) decreased by -31.8% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports recorded a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 45%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, non-wheat groats imports declined significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 24%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Kazakhstan was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 50% of total imports. Uzbekistan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 16% share, followed by Tajikistan (14%), Turkmenistan (10%) and Mongolia (7.7%). Kyrgyzstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Kazakhstan decreased at an average annual rate of -5.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Turkmenistan (+10.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkmenistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +10.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Uzbekistan (-3.9%), Tajikistan (-4.8%), Mongolia (-8.5%) and Kyrgyzstan (-22.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Uzbekistan (+16 p.p.) and Turkmenistan (+7.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Mongolia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan saw its share reduced by -4.3%, -5.6% and -12.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat) in Central Asia, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Mongolia, with a 10% share.
In Kazakhstan, non-wheat groats imports shrank by an average annual rate of -7.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (+4.0% per year) and Mongolia (-6.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a perceptible slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+8.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
