Groundnuts Market Size in Central Asia

For the fourth consecutive year, the Central Asian groundnuts market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 5.7% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, posted a buoyant expansion. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Groundnuts Production in Central Asia

In value terms, groundnuts production expanded modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 91%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Uzbekistan (X tons) and Tajikistan (X tons).

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +13.4%).

In 2022, the average yield of ground-nut (in-shell) in Central Asia rose markedly to X tons per ha, growing by 6.2% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the yield increased by 93%. Over the period under review, the groundnuts yield reached the peak level at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The groundnuts harvested area contracted to X ha in 2022, which is down by -10% on the previous year. Overall, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 25%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports in Central Asia

In 2022, shipments abroad of ground-nut (in-shell) decreased by -15.3% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 644% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, groundnuts exports contracted notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 1,427% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Uzbekistan was the largest exporter of ground-nut (in-shell) in Central Asia, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 83% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tajikistan (X tons), committing a 14% share of total exports. Kazakhstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Uzbekistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the ground-nut (in-shell) exports, with a CAGR of -3.0% from 2012 to 2022. Tajikistan (-6.3%) and Kazakhstan (-11.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+83 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Kazakhstan (-23.2 p.p.) and Tajikistan (-59.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) remains the largest groundnuts supplier in Central Asia, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tajikistan ($X), with a 6.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Uzbekistan amounted to +6.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tajikistan (-4.5% per year) and Kazakhstan (-1.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -12.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 105% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+11.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Central Asia

For the third consecutive year, Central Asia recorded growth in purchases abroad of ground-nut (in-shell), which increased by 45% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 100%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, groundnuts imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 97%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Kazakhstan (X tons) was the major importer of ground-nut (in-shell), mixing up 68% of total imports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) took a 26% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Turkmenistan (5.8%).

Imports into Kazakhstan decreased at an average annual rate of -5.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+88.4%) and Turkmenistan (+15.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +88.4% from 2012-2022. While the share of Kyrgyzstan (+26 p.p.) and Turkmenistan (+4.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Kazakhstan (-30.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ground-nut (in-shell) in Central Asia, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 15% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kazakhstan totaled -3.8%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kyrgyzstan (+64.5% per year) and Turkmenistan (+12.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 55%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
