In 2022, purchases abroad of plaster decreased by -12.2% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports continue to indicate a mild curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 45% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, plaster imports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a noticeable downturn. Kazakhstan (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons), Tajikistan (X tons) and Mongolia (X tons) represented roughly 98% of total imports in 2022. Turkmenistan (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Kyrgyzstan (with a CAGR of +7.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Tajikistan ($X) and Kyrgyzstan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 85% share of total imports. Mongolia and Turkmenistan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.
Mongolia, with a CAGR of +6.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 9.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 40%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Mongolia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mongolia (+0.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
