Exports in Central Asia

In 2021, overseas shipments of hair lotion and preparation increased by 25% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, exports continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 3,530%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hair lotion and preparation exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 5,986% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Uzbekistan represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 73% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), mixing up a 23% share of total exports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from Uzbekistan decreased at an average annual rate of -3.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+63.4%) and Kazakhstan (+34.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +63.4% from 2012-2021. While the share of Uzbekistan (+73 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Kazakhstan (-43.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Kyrgyzstan ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 99% share of total exports.

Kyrgyzstan, with a CAGR of +61.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -4.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 68% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Hair lotion and preparation imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 29% compared with 2020. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +118.9% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 58%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, hair lotion and preparation imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw resilient growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Kazakhstan (X tons) was the main importer of hair lotion and preparation, committing 61% of total imports. Uzbekistan (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Mongolia (X tons). All these countries together held near 31% share of total imports. The following importers - Turkmenistan (X tons) and Tajikistan (X tons) - each accounted for a 7.8% share of total imports.

Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+15.5%), Tajikistan (+9.5%), Mongolia (+6.1%), Kyrgyzstan (+5.4%) and Turkmenistan (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +15.5% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Uzbekistan increased by +17 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hair lotion and preparation in Central Asia, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Mongolia, with an 8.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Kazakhstan stood at +4.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (+24.5% per year) and Mongolia (+4.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 31% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
