Exports in Central Asia

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers, when their volume decreased by -27.9% to X tons. In general, exports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 2,052%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, hairpin exports fell to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 2,027% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Kazakhstan (X tons) was the key exporter of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers, creating 68% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), comprising a 32% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to hairpin exports from Kazakhstan stood at +36.7%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+175.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +175.2% from 2012-2021. While the share of Uzbekistan (+32 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Kazakhstan (-4.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest hairpin supplier in Central Asia, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with an 18% share of total exports.

In Kazakhstan, hairpin exports expanded at an average annual rate of +27.0% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 21% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 152% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+2.5%).

Hairpin Imports

Imports in Central Asia

In 2021, hairpin imports in Central Asia fell to X tons, which is down by -4.3% against the previous year. Total imports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -34.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 53% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hairpin imports dropped rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 228% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Uzbekistan was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 75% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), committing a 19% share of total imports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Tajikistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Uzbekistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers imports, with a CAGR of +33.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tajikistan (+17.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (-13.7%) and Kazakhstan (-14.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Uzbekistan increased by +75 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest hairpin importing markets in Central Asia were Kazakhstan ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Kyrgyzstan ($X), together accounting for 97% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +33.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -30.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 115% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+18.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
