Hand Tools Market Size in Central Asia

In 2021, the Central Asian hand tools market decreased by -7.8% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, consumption showed a slight downturn. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Central Asia

In 2021, the amount of hand tools exported in Central Asia dropped rapidly to X tons, waning by -21.7% against the previous year. Overall, exports, however, recorded buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 152% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

In value terms, hand tools exports dropped to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 41%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Uzbekistan (X tons) represented the largest exporter of hand tools, committing 62% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), making up a 36% share of total exports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Kazakhstan (with a CAGR of +12.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Kyrgyzstan ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 98% share of total exports.

Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +16.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a abrupt decline. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+4.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Central Asia

After four years of growth, overseas purchases of hand tools decreased by -18% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded measured growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 83% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, hand tools imports expanded slightly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +120.5% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 60%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan prevails in imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 74% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons), together making up an 18% share of total imports. Tajikistan (X tons) and Turkmenistan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hand tools imports, with a CAGR of +10.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+7.3%) and Tajikistan (+4.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Turkmenistan (-9.8%) and Kyrgyzstan (-14.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Kazakhstan (+33 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+9.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan saw its share reduced by -4.9% and -36.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hand tools in Central Asia, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with a 6.4% share.

In Kazakhstan, hand tools imports increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (+22.6% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (-7.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 26% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkmenistan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
