Hazelnut Market Size in Central Asia

After six years of growth, the Central Asian hazelnut market decreased by -3.8% to $X in 2021. The total consumption indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +69.4% against 2012 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

Hazelnut Production in Central Asia

In value terms, hazelnut production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +92.8% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the production volume increased by 20%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Kyrgyzstan (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons) and Tajikistan (X tons), with a combined 96% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +5.2%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average yield of hazelnuts in Central Asia declined slightly to X kg per ha, remaining relatively unchanged against 2020. Over the period under review, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 4.7% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X kg per ha. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the hazelnut yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, approx. X ha of hazelnuts were harvested in Central Asia; approximately mirroring the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 9.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to hazelnut production attained the maximum at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Central Asia

In 2021, shipments abroad of hazelnuts decreased by -53.4% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a modest increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 51,451% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hazelnut exports fell notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 16,853%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Uzbekistan (X tons) represented roughly 100% of total exports in 2021.

Uzbekistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hazelnuts exports, with a CAGR of +63.5% from 2012 to 2021. While the share of Uzbekistan (+99 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) also remains the largest hazelnut supplier in Central Asia.

In Uzbekistan, hazelnut exports expanded at an average annual rate of +68.7% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -42.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 674% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Uzbekistan.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Uzbekistan amounted to +3.2% per year.

Imports in Central Asia

In 2021, approx. X tons of hazelnuts were imported in Central Asia; jumping by 52% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 525%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, hazelnut imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 156%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Uzbekistan prevails in imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 89% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), comprising a 6.8% share of total imports. Tajikistan (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Uzbekistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hazelnuts imports, with a CAGR of +19.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tajikistan (+16.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-4.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Uzbekistan (+89 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Tajikistan and Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -2.9% and -81.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hazelnuts in Central Asia, comprising 93% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 4.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Uzbekistan amounted to +28.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (-6.5% per year) and Tajikistan (+4.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 39% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a perceptible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 119% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
