Hedge Shear Market Size in Central Asia

In 2021, the Central Asian hedge shear market decreased by -4.6% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total consumption indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +18.0% against 2018 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

The total production indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +17.1% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 31%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

Exports in Central Asia

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of hedge shears and two-handed pruning shears decreased by -42.8% to X kg in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 13,300% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hedge shear exports fell remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 12,075% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hedge shears and two-handed pruning shears exports, with a CAGR of +70.8% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) also remains the largest hedge shear supplier in Central Asia.

In 2021, approx. X tons of hedge shears and two-handed pruning shears were imported in Central Asia; picking up by 17% against 2020 figures. In general, imports posted a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 131%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, hedge shear imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a resilient increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Kazakhstan represented the key importer of hedge shears and two-handed pruning shears in Central Asia, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 55% of total imports in 2021. Uzbekistan (X tons) held an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tajikistan (14%), Turkmenistan (7.5%) and Kyrgyzstan (5.3%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to hedge shear imports into Kazakhstan stood at +6.9%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+38.4%), Tajikistan (+29.4%) and Turkmenistan (+17.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +38.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (-9.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Uzbekistan (+18 p.p.), Tajikistan (+11 p.p.) and Turkmenistan (+3.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan saw its share reduced by -8.8% and -21.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hedge shears and two-handed pruning shears in Central Asia, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tajikistan ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Kazakhstan amounted to +8.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tajikistan (+42.6% per year) and Uzbekistan (+38.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 44% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tajikistan (+10.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
