Exports in Central Asia

In 2021, shipments abroad of herbicides was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 540%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, herbicide exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 651%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 87% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons), together creating a 13% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to herbicide exports from Kazakhstan stood at +29.0%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+467.8%) and Kyrgyzstan (+270.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +467.8% from 2012-2021. Kyrgyzstan (+8 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+5.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -13.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest herbicide supplier in Central Asia, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 4.2% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Kazakhstan stood at +27.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kyrgyzstan (+266.2% per year) and Uzbekistan (+511.0% per year).

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -5.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 57%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+7.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, purchases abroad of herbicides increased by 15% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +51.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 45%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, herbicide imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 87% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 81% of total imports in 2021. Turkmenistan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 6.1% share, followed by Uzbekistan (5.7%). Mongolia (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +8.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+23.3%), Mongolia (+7.1%) and Kyrgyzstan (+5.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +23.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Turkmenistan (-1.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan increased by +5.7 and +3.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported herbicides in Central Asia, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with an 8.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkmenistan, with a 4.9% share.
