In 2021, the Central Asian preserved herring market decreased by -0.4% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. The total consumption indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +57.2% against 2015 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2020, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

The total production indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -2.1% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 32%. Exports in Central Asia

After four years of decline, overseas shipments of herrings (prepared or preserved) increased by 88% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a dramatic decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 169%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, preserved herring exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a dramatic slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 197%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of herrings (prepared or preserved), namely Kazakhstan, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the herrings (prepared or preserved) exports, with a CAGR of -29.6% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) also remains the largest preserved herring supplier in Central Asia.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 26% against the previous year. Export price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, preserved herring export price increased by +28.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Kazakhstan.

Preserved Herring Imports

Imports in Central Asia

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of herrings (prepared or preserved) decreased by -23.9% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed tangible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 65% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, preserved herring imports reached $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 68% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan was the major importer of herrings (prepared or preserved) in Central Asia, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 60% of total imports in 2021. Uzbekistan (X tons) took a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kyrgyzstan (6.1%) and Turkmenistan (6.1%). Tajikistan (X tons) and Mongolia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to preserved herring imports into Kazakhstan stood at +5.3%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+27.7%) and Tajikistan (+10.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +27.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mongolia (-1.7%), Kyrgyzstan (-5.7%) and Turkmenistan (-8.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+22 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Mongolia (-1.9 p.p.), Kyrgyzstan (-9.8 p.p.) and Turkmenistan (-13.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported herrings (prepared or preserved) in Central Asia, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkmenistan, with a 5.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Kazakhstan stood at +8.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uzbekistan (+57.4% per year) and Turkmenistan (-6.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+23.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
