Honey Market Size in Central Asia

The Central Asian honey market contracted slightly to $X in 2022, which is down by -2.4% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +14.4% against 2017 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Honey Production in Central Asia

In value terms, honey production reduced modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -2.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the production volume increased by 29%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Central Asia

In 2022, overseas shipments of honey decreased by -35.4% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports saw a slight decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 528% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, honey exports shrank remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a modest expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 694%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Kyrgyzstan represented the main exporter of honey in Central Asia, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 69% of total exports in 2022. Uzbekistan (X tons) held a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Kazakhstan (13%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to honey exports from Kyrgyzstan stood at -2.0%. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+17.4%) and Uzbekistan (+12.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +17.4% from 2012-2022. While the share of Uzbekistan (+17 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+11 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Kyrgyzstan (-2.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Kyrgyzstan ($X) remains the largest honey supplier in Central Asia, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 13% share of total exports.

In Kyrgyzstan, honey exports increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (+22.0% per year) and Kazakhstan (+13.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 3.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.7%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 26%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+8.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Honey Imports

Imports in Central Asia

In 2022, supplies from abroad of honey decreased by -25.2% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 65%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then fell sharply in the following year.

In value terms, honey imports declined remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a perceptible increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 76% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Kazakhstan (X tons), Mongolia (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) was the main importer of honey in Central Asia, making up 97% of total import. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +246.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest honey importing markets in Central Asia were Mongolia ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Uzbekistan ($X), together accounting for 98% of total imports.

Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +262.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 9.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
