In 2021, shipments abroad of iron or steel articulated link chain decreased by -94.5% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports showed a dramatic setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 245%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then dropped significantly in the following year.
In value terms, metal link chain exports dropped sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 184% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then fell sharply in the following year.

Kazakhstan was the major exporter of iron or steel articulated link chain in Central Asia, with the volume of exports accounting for X kg, which was near 40% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X kg), Uzbekistan (X kg) and Mongolia (X kg), together achieving a 60% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +193.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, the largest metal link chain supplying countries in Central Asia were Kazakhstan ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Mongolia ($X), together comprising 90% of total exports.
Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +30.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 93% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of iron or steel articulated link chain, when their volume increased by 14% to X tons. Overall, imports enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 117%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, metal link chain imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports posted a slight expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 111%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Kazakhstan (X tons) represented the key importer of iron or steel articulated link chain, comprising 50% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Tajikistan (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons), Mongolia (X tons) and Turkmenistan (X tons), together making up a 47% share of total imports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tajikistan (+47.1%), Mongolia (+7.3%) and Uzbekistan (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tajikistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +47.1% from 2012-2021. Turkmenistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (-11.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tajikistan (+20 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+12 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Turkmenistan (-2.7 p.p.), Kyrgyzstan (-9.5 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (-21.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported iron or steel articulated link chain in Central Asia, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkmenistan ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Tajikistan, with an 8.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Kazakhstan was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkmenistan (+1.6% per year) and Tajikistan (+28.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 6.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a perceptible reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 9% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
