The Central Asian steel plaited band market surged to $X in 2022, growing by 33% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. Exports in Central Asia

In 2022, overseas shipments of iron or steel plaited bands and slings decreased by -17.8% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 153%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, steel plaited band exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a pronounced increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 69%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 74% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), comprising a 25% share of total exports.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the iron or steel plaited bands and slings exports, with a CAGR of +27.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+14.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Kazakhstan (+59 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+25 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest steel plaited band supplying countries in Central Asia were Uzbekistan ($X) and Kazakhstan ($X).

Kazakhstan, with a CAGR of +21.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review.

In 2022, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 70% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 273%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+3.9%).

Imports in Central Asia

In 2022, approx. X tons of iron or steel plaited bands and slings were imported in Central Asia; rising by 113% against the previous year. In general, imports enjoyed resilient growth. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, steel plaited band imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports posted a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 129% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Uzbekistan was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 63% of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) held a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tajikistan (7.9%) and Mongolia (7.3%). Turkmenistan (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Uzbekistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the iron or steel plaited bands and slings imports, with a CAGR of +104.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mongolia (+6.5%), Tajikistan (+2.1%) and Kazakhstan (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (-3.3%) and Turkmenistan (-14.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Uzbekistan increased by +63 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported iron or steel plaited bands and slings in Central Asia, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Mongolia, with a 9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Uzbekistan totaled +113.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (-0.3% per year) and Mongolia (+8.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -26.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded pronounced growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 46%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
