In 2021, overseas shipments of knives, scissors and blades increased by 6.3% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports posted significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 445% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, knife and scissors exports rose significantly to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 544% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Kazakhstan was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 60% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), committing a 38% share of total exports. Kyrgyzstan (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Kazakhstan (with a CAGR of +35.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest knife and scissors supplying countries in Central Asia were Uzbekistan ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a combined 100% share of total exports.

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 7% against the previous year. Export price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, knife and scissors export price increased by +113.5% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 29% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In 2021, approx. X tons of knives, scissors and blades were imported in Central Asia; growing by 80% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, saw a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 99%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Kazakhstan represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 65% of total imports. Uzbekistan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 19% share, followed by Kyrgyzstan (5.8%) and Tajikistan (5.4%). Turkmenistan (X tons) and Mongolia (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of knives, scissors and blades. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+178.5%), Kyrgyzstan (+15.7%), Turkmenistan (+4.6%) and Tajikistan (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +178.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mongolia (-30.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period.
